Sarah
Sertic is a student at the Art Institute of Washington
perusing her Bachelors in Photographic Imaging.
She has been a freelance photographer for the past three years. She has
traveled
extensively all over the United States and has lived in such places as
Illinois, Louisiana, California, Wisconsin and her now residence
Virginia. At
the age of 14 at the behest of her art teacher in middle school she
started
attending classes over the summer at the Corcoran College of Art and
Design. She has studied various different art forms
from pottery, photography, painting and drawing. Though, starting at
the age of
16 she was introduced to the world of photography. For the first time
in Paris,
France she was given an Olympus OM1 35mm SLR and got to roam the
streets of
Paris. For the first few years of her exploration
into the
photographic arts she relied heavily on black and white film with some
smatterings of color in her work.
Her other work includes paintings and
assemblages. She draws inspiration from such artists as Jackson
Pollock,
Rosemary Feit Covey, Edward Weston and the Dada movement, Cutcher and Aziz and others. She has been in several jurried
exhibitions in the local community in a small gallery in Alexandria -
the Del
Ray Artisans- and is also a member of the Torpedo Factory; where she
one day
hopes to show her work permanently.
Her emphasis in her photography and
art is
usually of an industrial nature relying on abandoned places,
alternative models
and thematically abstract art. She believes in the importance of photography to illuminate problems that need to be addressed in society as a whole. She has now more recently stated to draw her inspiration from places such as wildlife and animal rehabilitation organizations as well as ecological and environmental topics. She is a firm believer that she needs to
put her
whole body and mind behind any given piece of artwork. She believes that as quoted from Louis Hine, that you need light to illuminate the darkest places, both physically and metaphorically.
Sarah is available for custom paintings, assemblages, portrait, family and
model photography.
